Yorkshire phrases and slang

The 1st of August is Yorkshire Day! Harrogate is a town in North Yorkshire so here are some words and phrases you might hear if you visit:

1. Aye – “Yes”

People will often reply by saying “aye” instead of yes.

Is this the way to the station?”

Aye.”

2. Grand / champion– “very good”

If something is very good, someone might say that it’s grand or champion.

“This meal is grand.”

3. Ey up – a greeting or exclamation

Someone might greet you by saying ey up.

“Ey up, how are you?”

4. Brew – a cup of tea

“Would you like a brew?”

5. Owt / nowt / summat – “anything” or “nothing” or “something”

“Do you want owt from the bakery?”

“No thank you, there’s nowt I like.”

“There must be summat you want.”

6. Love – a common term of endearment

“See you later, love.”

7. Ta / cheers – “thank you”

“Here’s your brew.”

“Ta, love.”

8. Lad / lass – “boy” or “girl”

“That lad ordered a brew and a ploughman’s.”

9. Bap – one of many names for a bread roll (the cause of many arguments in the UK)

“A ploughman’s sandwich is cheese and pickle in a bap.”

10. Ta-ra – “goodbye”

“Thanks for coming. Ta-ra.”

Hopefully, these words and phrases will help you understand the slang people in Yorkshire might use!
